Injured in Lyft at Atlantic City International Airport

Nearly three million motor vehicles are registered in New Jersey. Although some people may have more than one registered car, millions of drivers still travel the roadways and highways. Some individuals do not own a vehicle, cannot drive, or are visiting, yet they still require transportation. A surge in rideshare companies has created a solution for people in need of transportation.

For many rideshare services, like Lyft, are especially handy for travel to and from airports. The Atlantic City International Airport is an incredibly popular destination for many. However, traffic congestion can frequently lead to serious collisions and crashes involving Lyft vehicles.

In case of an accident, the Lyft driver and the Lyft company may be liable for the passengers’ injuries and damages. If you or someone you love was injured in an accident involving a Lyft car while at the Atlantic City International Airport, contact the Petrillo & Goldberg law firm for a free consultation to discuss case.

Atlantic City International Airport

Atlantic City International Airport is a commercial and general public airport. It began as a naval air station in 1942 on land leased from the City of Atlantic City in New Jersey. In 1958, the city transferred the lease to the Federal Aviation Administration. Soon after, the property was sold to the federal government. The city kept ownership of 84 acres, the civilian airport terminal and its support facilities. Now it is a joint civil-military airport.

What Is Lyft?

Lyft is a rideshare company that began in 2012. It provides transportation services through Lyft drivers who use their personal vehicles. People arrange for a Lyft ride by downloading the Lyft app and setting up an account with their payment information. Next, app users can request a ride from anywhere. Once the customer and driver have confirmed, Lyft can pick up the user and take them to their destination.

Lyft Accidents at Atlantic City International Airport

Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) has rules for Lyft drivers to follow to ensure the passengers, airport employees and other drivers’ safety. ACY has a designated staging area where Lyft vehicles can wait for passengers. If the area is full, the Lyft drivers must leave the airport. They may not stay in another area on the airport premises. If Lyft drivers violate any of the regulations, they will receive an administrative citation from the airport. Even with the rules in place, the ACY is a crowded airport, where accidents involving Lyft vehicles can happen.

Compensation in a Lyft Accident at Atlantic City International Airport

Lyft is a separate business from the ACY. If an accident involving a Lyft driver occurs at ACY, the liability is on the driver and Lyft. If a Lyft driver hit your vehicle or you were a passenger in a Lyft and suffered injuries, you may seek compensation for your injuries and damages. You may be entitled to recover compensation for damages, such as:

  • Lost wages
  • Loss of employment
  • Medical expenses
  • Future medical expenses
  • Emotional distress
  • Physical impairment

Lyft provides insurance coverage for its drivers. If a Lyft driver causes an accident, different types of insurance policies are available. The type of insurance policy available will be based on which driving mode the Lyft driver was in during the accident.

When the driver’s Lyft app is turned off, and they are not looking for a passenger, the driver’s personal insurance policy covers an accident. The Lyft contingent liability goes into effect when the driver turns the Lyft app on but is not actively driving a passenger. If the Lyft driver is involved in an accident when they are carrying a passenger to a destination, Lyft’s insurance policy kicks in.

In the event of an accident involving a Lyft car, the injured party may file a claim against the driver’s commercial insurance, or if they do not have such a policy, file a lawsuit against Lyft’s insurance.
