In December 2009 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Cantz filed a claim in April 2012, alleging he \u201csustained prostate cancer due to exposure to Group 1 carcinogens over the course of his career as a firefighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cantz supplied medical records and testimony from medical experts. He claimed he was &#8220;routinely exposed to diesel exhaust, smoke, soot and hazardous materials throughout his career.&#8221; Furthermore, he said he \u201csometimes wore his self-contained breathing apparatus when fighting fires,\u201d but still dealt with \u201cdirect exposure to smoke when he took off his apparatus during the end stages of the fire response.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The opposing counsel, attorneys for the city of Philadelphia, argued there is \u201cinsufficient evidence\u201d that prostate cancer can develop because one is exposed to Group 1 carcinogens while firefighting. In addition, the city\u2019s attorneys said prostate cancer is not linked to things one experiences on the job, but rather the disease can occur because of age and family history. <\/p>\n<p>The court, which upheld a recent Workers\u2019 Comp board decision, ruled Cantz did not \u201cshow that his type of cancer is . . . caused by exposure to a known carcinogen which is recognized as a Group 1 carcinogen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[footer block_id=&#8217;721&#8242;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>El Tribunal del Estado fall\u00f3 en contra del recurso presentado por un bombero veterano contra su solicitud de indemnizaci\u00f3n laboral, en el que alegaba que su profesi\u00f3n hab\u00eda provocado su c\u00e1ncer de pr\u00f3stata.
