Does workers’ compensation cover scars from work-related injuries?
Yes, if the scar is disfiguring, then you may receive workers’ compensation. The employee does not have to prove a loss of function to recover for a disfiguring scar. For example, a worker may recover for a disfiguring scar on their hand even though they have full use of the hand. Medical testimony can be introduced, but, often, the lawyers and judge can view the employee’s scar in court.
An issue that may be disputed is whether an employee can recover a percentage of disability based on the part of the body where the scar is located, like the hand. If the employee experiences psychological problems because of the appearance of the scar, the award will be based on a percentage of the body as a whole.
