What benefits do I receive while on worker’s compensation?

After a work-related injury or illness, an employee may have medical expenses. Medical bills from treatment, medications, devices or equipment may be expensive and continue to increase over the span of the injury or illness. An employee may also be unable to work. The inability to work becomes a financial hardship and can take an emotional toll of the injured employee.

Pursuant to the New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Law, an employee may file a worker’s compensation claim to receive benefits to cover his medical bills as well as wage compensation while he is out of work. The benefits include:

  • Medical benefits
  • Temporary total disability benefits (TTD)
  • Permanent total disability benefits (PTD)
  • Partial permanent disability benefits (PPD)

The medical benefits pay for the employee’s reasonable and necessary medical expenses. An employee may receive TTD benefits when they are disabled and unable to work for more than seven days. They also must actively remain under the care of a doctor. PTD benefits are given based on the percentage of the injured worker’s scheduled or non-scheduled loss. A scheduled loss is a loss involving arms, hands, legs, toes, eyes, nose, fingers, ears or teeth. All other bodily parts or internal systems are labeled non-scheduled losses. If the injury or illness the worker sustains prevents them from being employable, they may be eligible for PPD benefits.
