What is the Pennsylvania Bureau of Workers’ Compensation?

The Pennsylvania Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is the division within the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry that regulates and enforces the laws concerning workers’ compensation accident, insurance, compensation, and benefits. Workers’ compensation is the exclusive remedy in Pennsylvania for compensation for work-related accidents, illnesses, and death of employees. Most employers in Pennsylvania are required by state law to carry insurance that covers work-related accidents and the resulting injuries, illnesses, and death of their employees. The employers may a worker’s compensation insurance policy with an insurance agency or qualify to carry self-insurance.

The Bureau makes sure that employers have adequate workers’ compensation coverage on their employees as well as penalizes the for noncompliance of such insurance. The Pennsylvania Bureau of Workers’ Compensation also handles worker’s compensation claims filed by employees. An employee may file a claim petition if the employer or employer’s worker’s compensation insurance provider denies his claim. A workers’ compensation judge review and resolves the claim after holding a hearing regarding the issues of the claim.
